摘要:Thermodynamics is a science concerning the state of a system, whether it is stable, metastable or unstable, when interacting with the surroundings.  Computational thermodynamics based on the CALPHAD approach enables quantitative calculations of thermodynamic properties as a function of both external conditions and internal configurations and is the foundation of Materials Genome®, materials design, and integrated computational materials engineering (ICME).  Generally speaking, phase stability is the key for computational design of materials design to obtain desired phases and avoid detrimental phases, while the properties of individual phases and phase interfaces are used to predict properties of materials.  For a system not at equilibrium, spontaneous and irreversible internal processes are possible inside the system with each of them resulting in positive entropy production due to the second law of thermodynamics. In this presentation, the fundamentals of entropy and entropy production are reviewed, and their applications to critical phenomena and thermodynamically stable nanograins are discussed. Furthermore, our recent efforts in connecting the entropy production and information production/erasing will be presented along with potential impact on complex systems.
